Here is  square #5 from the Sensational Sampler, a free crochet baby blanket. Use an H hook and block to 8″. I add a dc border in Ecru around it after blocking which brought it to 9″.  Remember that these squares can be used for more than a lapghan or afghan. Use them for potholders (sew two together), dishcloths, washcloths, shawls, scarves – all depending on the yarn you choose and the way you join them together. Have fun with them!

Puff St = [yo, insert hook into next st, yo and draw a loop through] 3 times into same st, yo and draw through 7 loops on hook, work 1 firm ch to close puff st.

With D ch 28.

Row 1 (RS): Work 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc into each ch to end, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (count as 1 dc), skip first sc, 1 dc into each sc to end, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc into each of first 2 dc, *ch 3, skip 2 dc, 1 puff st into next dc, ch 3, skip 2 dc, 1 sc into next dc; rep from * to last dc, 1 sc into 3rd of ch-3 at beg of previous row, turn.

Row 4: Ch 5 (count as 1 dc, ch 2), work 3 sc into closing ch of next puff st, *ch 3, 3 sc into closing ch of next puff st; rep from * to last 2 sc, ch 2, 1 dc into last sc, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, 1 sc into first dc, 2 sc into first ch-2 sp, *1 sc into each of next 3 sc, 3 sc into next ch-3 sp; rep from * to end working last sc into 3rd of ch-5 at beg of previous row, turn.

Rows 6 – 17: Repeat Rows 2 – 5 three more times.

Row 18: Repeat Row 2. Finish off, weave in ends, block.
