Part 4 – Secondaries

Just joining the CAL? Check out these blog posts for previous pattern parts.

Last week we started focusing on the flight wings of the bird, collectively called remiges, with the Tertiaries. This week, we move on to the feathers called the Secondaries.

The Secondary wing feathers permit birds to take to the skies. Unlike other feathers, remiges are anchored to bone with strong ligaments so they can withstand the demands of flight and be precisely positioned. Secondaries provide most of the lift by overlapping to form an efficient *airfoil. These run along the ‘arm’ of the wing and sustain the bird in the air, giving it lift. The number of secondary feathers varies with different species. Experiments have shown that, if half of the secondaries are removed, a bird will still be able to fly, but some control will be lost.

*Airfoil – a part of an aircraft’s or other vehicle’s surface that acts on the air to provide lift or control, e.g. an aileron, wing, or propeller.
