Starfire Afghan Square

This is a free crochet pattern for an afghan square. It is for the Intermediate Beginner. Special stitches include the bobble and fan, and contains clear directions for each. This design looks great in a multitude of colors. Enjoy!

STARFIRE AFGHAN SQUARE
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate Beginner
 
FINISHED SIZE: 12” square
 
MATERIALS: Worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook size I / 5.5 mm
Tapestry hook
 
SPECIAL STITCHES:
Bobble = work 3 dc into next st until 1 loop of each remains on hook, yo and through all 4 loops on hook.
Fan = into next dc work (1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc).
 
CHANGING COLORS:
When changing colors at the end of a round during the sl st, draw the next color through the last loop of the stitch for the sl st, then begin next round with new color.
 
INSTRUCTIONS:
 
Rnd. 1: Ch 5 (counts as 1dc, ch 1), in first ch work (1 dc, 1 ch) 7 times, sl st into 4 th ch of beg ch-5. Pull beg tail to close hole.
 
Rnd. 2: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc, ch 1), work 1 dc into first ch sp, ch 1, (1 dc into next dc, ch 1, 1 dc into next ch sp, ch 1) 7 times, sl st into 3rd of 4th ch at beg of round. (16 dc) Sample changes color here.
 
Rnd. 3: Ch 3(counts as 1 dc), work 2 dc into same st as last sl st until 1 loop of each remains on hook, yo and through all 3 loops on hook (1 bobble made at beg of round), ch 2, (1 bobble into next dc, ch 2) 15 times, sl st into top of first bobble. (16 bobbles) Sample changes color here.
 
Rnd. 4: Ch 3, work 3 dc into first ch-2 sp, (1 dc into next bobble, 3 dc into next ch-2 sp) 15 times, sl st into 3rd of ch-3 at beg of round. (64 dc)
 
Rnd. 5: Ch 3, work (1 dc, 1 hdc) into same st as last sl st, skip 1 dc, 1 sc into next dc, ( skip 1 dc, 1 fan into next dc, skip 1 dc, 1 sc into next dc) 15 times, skip last dc, work (1 hdc, 1 dc) into same st as last sl st at end of prev round, sl st into 3rd of ch-3 at beg of round. (16 fans) Sample changes color here.
 
Rnd. 6: Ch 1, 1 sc into same st as last sl st, ch 5, (1 sc into center dc of next fan, ch 5) 15 times, sl st into first sc.
 
Rnd. 7: Sl st into ch-5 sp, in same sp work (ch 3, 4 dc), work 5 dc in each ch-5 sp around, join with sl st to top of beg dc. (80 dc) Sample changes color here.
 
Rnd. 8: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, tr in next st, in next st work (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) corner made, tr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, *sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, tr in next st, in next st work (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) corner made, tr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * twice more; join with sl st in first sc. (96 sts)
 
Rnd. 9: Ch 3, *1 dc in each st to corner ch-2 sp, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * around square, join with sl st to top of beg dc.
 
Rnd. 10: Rep round 9. Sample changes color here.
 
Rnd. 11: Rep round 9 using hdc instead of dc and working 3 hdc in each corner. Finish off, weave in ends, block.
