SILENT NIGHT ORNAMENT SQUARE – MAKE 3
ABBREVIATIONS
BL = back loop
Beg = beginning
Ch/s = chain/s
Dc = double crochet
Dtr = double treble crochet
FL = front loop
Hdc = half double crochet
Hk = hook
Lp/s = loop/s
PM = place marker
Prev = previous
RM = remove marker
Sc = single crochet
Sk = skip/skipped
Sl st = slip stitch
SM = stitch marker
Sp/s = space/s
St/s = stitch/es
Tog = together
Tr = treble crochet
Yo = yarn over
HOOK – Crochet hook size I / 5.5mm
FINISHED SIZE – 8” square
SPECIAL STITCHES
BegPc (Beginning Popcorn) – Ch 3, 4 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through 3rd ch of beg ch-3, place dropped lp on hk and pull through.
Pc (Popcorn) – Work 5 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through top of first st made, place dropped lp on hk and pull through st.
Fpsc (front post single crochet) – Insert hk from front to back and to front again around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp, complete as regular sc.
Fpdtr (front post double treble crochet) – Yo 3 times and insert hk from front to back and to front again around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hk] 4 times.
Tr2tog (treble crochet 2 sts together) – Yo twice, insert hk in st indicated, yo and pull up lp, (yo and draw through 2 lps) twice, (2 lps on hk), rep into next st indicated until 3 lps on hk, yo and draw through all lps on hk.
Pick up tr – Insert hk first into BL of Color F tr directly in front and then into designated st behind it, complete a sc.
INSTRUCTIONS – Make 3.
With D ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring – or make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Join B with sl st to any dc, Begpc in same st, ch 4, sk next dc and PM in post of sk dc (not top of st), [pc in next st, ch 4, sk next dc and PM in post] around, join with sl st to top of Begpc. Finish off. (6 pc, 6 ch-4)
Rnd 3: Working in front of Rnd 2, join E with sl st to any sk dc on Rnd 1 leaving SM in place, ch 3 (count as dc), 2 dc in same st, fpsc around top of next pc, [3 dc in next sk dc leaving SM in place, fpsc around top of next pc] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Do not finish off. (18 dc, 6 fpsc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in same st, 1 dc in next st, [2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (36 dc)
Rnd 5: Join D with sc to any dc directly above a fpsc, sc in next 2 sts, [fpdtr around next marked post, RM, sc in next 3 sts, fpdtr around same post as before, sc in next 3 sts] around omitting last 3 sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (12 fpdtr, 36 sc)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 2 sts, [ch 1, sk next fpdtr, sc in next 3 sts] around omitting last 3 sts, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off. (36 sc, 12 ch-1)
Rnd 7: Working in front of ch-1, join C with sl st to any sk fpdtr, Begpc in same st, ch 5, [pc in next sk fpdtr, ch 5] around, join with sl st to Begpc. Finish off. (12 pc, 12 ch-5)
Rnd 8: Working in front of ch-5, join F with sl st to first sk sc on Rnd 6 after any pc, ch 3 (count as dc), dc in same st, [ch 1, sk next st, 2 dc in next st, fpsc around top of next pc, 2 dc in next st] around omitting last 2 dc, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (48 dc, 12 ch-1, 12 fpsc)
Rnd 9: Join D with sc one st after any fpsc, sc in next st, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 sts, tr2tog placing first leg in prev sk st on Rnd 6 and second leg in next sk st on Rnd 6, [sk next fpsc, sc in next 2 sts, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 sts, tr2tog placing first leg in same st as prev tr2tog and second leg in next sk st] around, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off. (12 tr2tog, 60 sc)
Rnd 10: Working in BL this Rnd, join A with sc to any tr2tog, sc in each st around, join with sl st to FL of beg sc (leaving BL unworked.) (72 sc)
Rnd 11: Ch 4 (counts as tr), tr in FL of next 6 sts. Finish off. (7 tr)
Rnd 12: Working in BL entire Rnd, join G with sc to behind ch-4 join, sc in of next 6 sts, [hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, tr in next st, (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next st, tr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts] around omitting last 7 sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (21 sts per side, 4 ch-2)
Rnd 13: Ch 3, dc in next 13 sts, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 21 sts] around omitting last 14 dc, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (25 dc per side, 4 ch-2)
Rnd 14: Ch 1, working in BL of each tr, pick up tr and sc in same st as join, sc in both lps of next 6 sts of Rnd 12 while picking up each consecutive tr in BL (see Special Stitches), [sc in both lps of each st to ch-2 sp, (sc, hdc, sc) in ch-2 sp] around, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off leaving a long tail for joining. (27 sc per side, 4 hdc for corners)
