Week 3 – Righthand

Week 3 – Lefthand

Art Deco Afghan on Ravelry – $2.50

So far, we have been making circles and half circles. Many of you have been asking, “How do the circles become a clamshell pattern?” Well, this week we shall find out!  It’s all pretty simple. When designing this section of the afghan, I debated on what method to use for the clamshells. I tried several things, and decided on this particular method in the end. It’s simpler, in my opinion, and it leaves a nice crisp design.

There is some detailed sewing together of pieces in this section, and some of you may cringe a bit at the thought. But you have the entire week to take your time and create this beautiful clamshell art piece. I guarantee, it is totally worth the effort.

So, this week, we’ll make four more half circles in solid colors, two quarter circles in solid colors, and a very pretty motif. We’ll put together all the circles, half circles, and quarter circles to create the clamshell pattern. The clamshell pattern is Section One of the overall afghan design. You will make the motif this week, but it will actually be part of Section Two of the afghan. Once done with the motif, you’ll just set it aside for Week 4.

Here are my inspiration photos for the pretty Motif. I just love the clean lines and stacked diamond look. I hope you like my interpretation. 💜

IMPORTANT NOTE:Please notice that when making the Motif, the Lepape and Seattle colorways will substitute colors.

Does HDC stand for half-double crochet? I looked for the acronym on the list of abbreviations, but didn't find it….

  2. Melinda

Hi Lisette, Yes. HDC is for half double crochet. Accidental omission. Thanks for the heads-up. 👍

  3. Lisette

My magic circle expanded during round 4, going from too tight to put a hook through to > 1 cm diameter. Any suggestions on how to keep that from happening?

  4. Melinda

I would pull it closed after the first few rounds, and weave in the ends.
