October is here! Well, actually, it was here yesterday – so I’m a day late with this post. Oops! Nevertheless, here’s a brand new afghan design for the beginning of Autumn, my favorite time of year.
This beautiful design is the Urban Cabin Afghan. It’s a fresh and modern take on the traditional log cabin design. I’m sure you’ve seen some log cabin quilts before. I have a couple in my home that my grandmothers quilted. They are indeed treasures and such a comfort to snuggle up with. They soothe me with fond memories of my grannies and the good old days of yesteryear. It’s magical to fall asleep snuggled up with one of my granny’s quilts, and have nostalgic dreams of days past.
Log Cabin blocks usually start with a square. Strips are added around the square, often with two sides being of lighter fabrics and the other two sides of darker prints. A red center square was thought to symbolize the hearth of the home, and a yellow center was believed to represent light shining through the window.
Quilt historians found that the Log Cabin design became popular in 1863, when the Union army was raising money for the Civil War by raffling quilts. President Abraham Lincoln grew up in a log cabin. The pattern may have been a symbol of loyalty to him as head of the Union.
The log cabin block has a large number of attractive and versatile settings that create different looks. There are endless options for how to layout blocks in a log cabin quilt. Over the last 150+ years, since log cabin blocks first became popular, several block layouts have become classics.
I based my Urban Cabin Afghan design on a colorful quilt I saw on Pinterest. I fell in love with the bright colors, the layout, and the way the particular fabric looked textured.
My crochet version has the same layout, and since we are creating our own fabric, I added some textured stitches to give it that little something extra. The crochet Urban Cabin Afghan is comprised of two separate rectangle components arranged in a specific layout. The colors are planned, not impromptu. I have included in the pattern, a color page so that you can plan your own color layout.
Aren’t the colors I chose for this afghan simply vibrant? I used Cascade Yarns Anthem Chunky in the following colors and amounts:
Total Yardage – 3,621 yds.
Total Ounces – 59.5 oz.
Per Skein – 213 yds., 3.5 oz.
A = Dark Turquoise – 5 skeins
B = White Peach – 3 skeins
C = Autumn Sunset – 3 skeins
D = Sun Dried Tomato – 3 skeins
E = Bachelor Button – 3 skeins
