Graceful Granny Square

Free crochet granny square pattern. This granny square is all gussied up to the next level, but is an easy and quick make. Round by round photos and clear instructions will guide you to complete a satisfying project.

YARN

Cascade Yarns Anthem

A: Apricot Ice (71) – 5g / 0.2oz / 11yds

B: Peach Pink (48) – 5g / 0.2oz / 11yds

C: Burnt Orange (39) – 7g / 0.3oz / 16yds

D: Bachelor Button (30) – 23g / 0.9oz / 48yds

E: Dark Turquoise (42) – 9g / 0.4oz / 21yds

F: Light Blue (25) – 30g / 1oz / 53yds

WEIGHT:   4 – Medium

SKILL LEVEL:   Easy

HOOK:    I / 5.5 mm

ABBREVIATIONS:

Beg = beginning

BLO = back loop only

Ch/s = chain/s

Dc= double crochet

FLO = front loop only

Hdc = half double crochet

Hk = hook

Lp/s = loop/s

Rnd = round

Sc = single crochet

Sk = skip/skipped

Sl St = slip stitch

SM = stitch markers

Sp/s = space/s

St/s = stitch/es

Tr = treble crochet

Yo = yarn over

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Begpc (Beginning Popcorn): Ch 3, 4 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through 3rd ch of beg ch-3, place dropped lp on hk and pull through.

BegV-St: (Ch 5, dc) in same st.

Bpsc (back post single crochet): Insert hk from back to front to back around post of st indicated, yo and pull up lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hk.

Bpsc2tog: [Insert hk from back to front to back around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp] twice (3 lps on hk), yo and draw through all 3 lps on hk. Counts as 1 bpsc.

Fpdc (front post double crochet): Yo, insert hk from front to back and to front again around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp (3 lps on hk), (yo and draw through 2 lps on hk) twice.

Fpsc (front post single crochet): Insert hk from front to back and to front again around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hk.

Join with fpsc: Place slip knot on hk, working from front of fabric, insert hk from front to back to front around top of any Pc, yo and pull up lp around back of top of Pc and into front of fabric, yo and draw through 2 lps on hk.

Pc (popcorn):  Work 5 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through top of first st made, place dropped lp on hk and pull through st.

Petal: (2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc) in same sp.

Point: (5 dc, ch 1, 5 dc) in same lp.

V-St: (Dc, ch 2, dc) in same sp/st.

NOTES:

*The closing corner hdc join is equal to and counted as a ch-2 corner.

*The ch-1 at beg of Rnds does not count as a stitch. It is used to attain height for the hdc.

INSTRUCTIONS

Rnd 1: With A ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring, ch 4 (count as dc, ch 1), [(dc, ch 1) in ring] 7 times, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4.  (8 dc, 8 ch-1)

Rnd 2: Sl st into next ch-1 sp, Begpc in same sp, ch 3, [pc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3] around, join with sl st to top of Begpc. Finish off. (8 pc, 8 ch-3)

Rnd 3: Join B with fpsc around top of any pc – see Special Stitches, [2 sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 7, sl st in 7th ch from hk, 1 sc in same ch-3 sp, fpsc around top of next pc] around omitting last fpsc, join with sl st to beg fpsc. (8 fpsc, 24 sc, 8 ch-lps)

Rnd 4: [Skipping all sc this Rnd, work Point in next ch-lp, sl st in next fpsc] around. Finish off. (8 Points, 8 sl st)

Rnd 5: Join C with sc to any ch-1 sp, [bpsc around next 4 dc, bpsc2tog – placing 1st leg around last dc of same Point and 2nd leg around 1st dc of next Point, bpsc around next 4 dc, sc in next ch-1 sp] around omitting last sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (8 bpsc2tog, 8 sc, 64 bpsc)

Rnd 6: [Ch 3, sk next 4 bpsc, pc in next bpsc2tog, ch 3, sk next 4 bpsc, sl st in next sc] around. Finish off. (8 pc, 8 sl st, 16 ch-3)

Rnd 7: Join D with sl st to any Rnd 5 sc – working over the Rnd 6 sl st, [Petal in next ch-3 sp, sl st in top of next pc, Petal in next ch-3 sp, sl st in next Rnd 5 sc – working over the Rnd 6 sl st] around, placing last sl st in same sc as first sl st. Finish off. (16 sl st, 16 Petals)

Rnd 8: Working over Rnd 7 sl st, join E with sl st to top of any pc,  [bpsc in next 7 sts of Petal, working in front of Rnd 7 – fpdc around entire top of next Point, bpsc in next 7 sts of Petal, working in front of Rnd 7 – fpdc around top of next pc] around omitting last fpdc, work last fpdc around top of first pc until 2 lps on hk, insert hk into next bpsc, yo and draw through both lps on hk for join. (16 fpdc, 112 bpsc)

Rnd 9: Work BegV-St in last fpdc just made, [sk next 3 bpsc of next Petal, sc in next bpsc, sk next 3 bpsc of same Petal, V-St in next fpdc] around omitting last V-St, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-5. Finish off. (16 V-St, 16 sc)

The squaring process begins with the next Rnd. If your center round motif begins to cup, you may want to loosen tension on the ch-1 spaces, or lightly block when square is completed. Usually, the square will flatten out on its own after all Rnds are added.

Rnd 10: Join F with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 4 (count as tr), 2 tr in same sp, [ch 1, 3 hdc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 hdc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next ch-2 sp] around omitting last (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr), 3 tr in beg ch-2 sp to complete the first corner, join with hdc to top of beg ch-4. (Per side: 6 tr, 6 hdc, 3 sc, 4 ch-1) (4 ch-2 for corners)

Rnd 11: Ch 3, (count as dc), 2 dc in same sp just made, [ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 4 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp] around omitting last (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), 3 dc in beg corner sp to complete first corner, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3.  (Per Side: 18 dc, 5 ch-1) (4 ch-2 for corners)

Rnd 12: Ch 3 (count as dc), 2 dc in same sp just made, [ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 5 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp] around omitting last (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), 3 dc in beg corner sp to complete first corner, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3.  (Per Side: 21 dc, 6 ch-1) (4 ch-2 for corners)

It may be helpful to add SM to the BL of the corner hdc in the next Rnd.

Rnd 13: Ch 1, (hdc, sc) in same sp just made, [work 1 sc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp to next ch-2 corner sp, (sc, hdc, sc) in corner ch-2 sp] around omitting last (sc, hdc, sc), place 1 sc in beg ch-2 sp to complete first corner, join with sl st to beg hdc. (29 sc per side, 4 hdc for corners)

NO PHOTO FOR RND 13.

Rnd 14 is worked in same color as Rnd 13. If you’d like a contrasting color, finish off Rnd 13 and join a new color to Rnd 14.

Rnd 14: Working in FLO this Rnd, ch 1, (hdc, sc) in same hdc, [work 1 sc in each sc to next corner hdc, (sc, hdc, sc) in corner hdc] around omitting last (sc, hdc, sc), place 1 sc in beg hdc to complete first corner, join with sl st to beg hdc. Finish off. (31 sc per side, 4 hdc for corners)

Rnd 15: Working in BLO of Rnd 13, join D with sl st to any corner hdc, ch 3 (count as dc), dc in same st, [work 1 dc in each st to next corner hdc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner hdc] around omitting last (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), place 2 dc in beg hdc to complete first corner, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3. (33 dc per side, 4 ch-2 for corners)

Rnd 16: Ch 1, (hdc, sc) in same sp just made, [work 1 sc in each dc to next ch-2 corner sp, (sc, hdc, sc) in corner ch-2 sp] around omitting last (sc, hdc, sc), place 1 sc in beg ch-2 sp to complete first corner, join with sl st to beg hdc. Finish off, block as desired. (35 sc per side, 4 hdc for corners)
