Wish Upon a Star Afghan Square

This free crochet pattern is designed to spark your imagination with playfulness and color. Go ahead and  make a cute little crochet baby blanket with some dreamy stars and wishful thinking. We all need some starry nights and twinkly thoughts to lull us to sleep, and this project is such a relaxing and satisfying make. Make your starry night a crochet one!

SKILL LEVEL:  Easy

FINISHED SIZE:  12” square

MATERIALS:  4 colors worsted weight yarn – Labeled A, B, C, & D.

Crochet hk size I / 5.5 mm, Tapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS:  

Beg = beginning

Bet = between

Ch/s = chain/s

Dc= double crochet

Hdc = half double crochet

Hk = hook

Rnd = round

Sc = single crochet

Sk = skip/skipped

Sl St = slip stitch

Sp/s = space/s

St/s = stitch/es

Tr = treble crochet

SPECIAL STITCHES:

BegShell: (Ch 3, 2 dc) in same st/sp.

Shell: 3 dc in same st/sp.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Rnd 1: With A ch 4 and join to form a ring – OR make a magic ring, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 9 hdc in ring, join with sl st to beg hdc. (9 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, join with sl st to beg hdc. (18 hdc)

Rnd 3: (BegShell, ch 2, Shell) in same st, sk next 2 sts, [(Shell, ch 2, Shell) in next st, sk next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (12 Shells)

Rnd 4: Sl st into next 2 dc and ch-2 sp, (BegShell, ch 3, Shell) in same sp, sc in bet next 2 Shells, [(Shell, ch 3, Shell) in next ch-2 sp, sc in bet next 2 Shells] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (12 Shells, 6 sc)

Rnd 5: Join B with sc to any ch-3 sp, [ch 4, sk next Shell, dc in next sc, ch 4, sk next Shell, sc in next ch-3 sp] around omitting last sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (6 sc, 6 dc, 12 ch-4)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st, [5 sc in next ch-4 sp, sc in next dc, 5 sc in next ch-4 sp, sc in next sc] around omitting last sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (72 sc)

Rnd 7: Ch 6 (count as tr, ch 2), tr in same st – corner made, [dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 7 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, (tr, ch 2, tr) in next st – corner made] around omitting last corner, join with sl st to 4th ch of beg ch-6. (19 sts per side)

Rnd 8: Ch 2 (count as hdc), work (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in each ch-2 sp and 1 hdc in each st around, join with sl st to beg ch-2. Finish off. (23 hdc per side)

Rnd 9: Join A with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 5 (count as hdc, ch 3), hdc in same sp – corner made, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, [(hdc in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts) to next corner sp, (hdc, ch 3, hdc) in corner sp – corner made] around omitting last corner, join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-5. Finish off. (8 ch-2 sps per side)

Rnd 10: Join C with sl st to any corner ch-3 sp, (BegShell, ch 2, Shell) in same sp, [Shell in each ch-2 sp to next corner ch-3, (Shell, ch 2, Shell) in corner ch-3 sp] around omitting last corner, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (10 Shells per side)

Rnd 11: Join A with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 5 (count as hdc, ch 3), hdc in same sp, [ch 2, (hdc in sp bet next 2 Shells, ch 2) to corner ch-2 sp, (hdc, ch 3, hdc) in corner ch-2 sp] around omitting last corner, join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-5. Finish off. (10 ch-2 per side, 4 ch-3)

Rnd 12: Join D with sl st to any corner ch-3 sp, (BegShell, ch 2, Shell)  in same sp, [Shell in each ch-3 sp to next corner ch-3, (Shell, ch 2, Shell) in corner ch-3 sp] around omitting last corner, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (12 Shells per side)

Rnd 13: Ch 3, work 1 dc in each st around and (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner ch-2 sp, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (40 dc per side)

Weave in ends, block.
