Art Deco Afghan on Ravelry – $2.50

Today is the final installment for our period masterpiece. In order to tie together all of our different deco sections, I’m echoing one of the previous stitch patterns. We will be using the Decorative Band as our Border. I really love this stitch pattern, and I love the textured simplicity of it. What a great way to complete our work of art!

HOOK – I / 5.5 mm

Use the hook size appropriate for your yarn and tension.

Cont = continue/ing

Hdc = half double crochet

INSTRUCTIONS

BORDER – Use color A

To begin the Border, you already have 2 rows of 135 sc across the top and bottom of afghan. You will work 2 rows of sc along both long sides of the afghan to match. All you need is an odd number of sc stitches on each side for the Border stitch pattern. You can just wing it, and work an odd numbered amount of sc across each side however they will fit – not crowding in too many nor stretching out too few. This is the easiest way to begin the Border, and no one will ever know if the number of stitches on each side aren’t the same.

If you prefer more detailed symmetry and want the same number of stitches on each side, you can do that too. I did this and will show you how I did it. But remember, the border is very forgiving, and exact stitch counts aren’t really necessary. Just make sure you have an ODD number of stitches on each side.

Set-up Rows – I worked a total of 191 sc across each long side.

Holding afghan with RS facing and long side edge in hand, join color A with sc to Left Side corner. This will be the vertical post of the end of row sc edging on short side. Do not join your sc to the topof this sc, but to the side.

Row 1 (RS):

Color A Edging – 2 sc (includes the joining sc)

Right Angle color D – 23 sc

Right Angle color B – 23 sc

Color A Edging – 2 sc

Quarter Circle color C – 13 sc

Half Circle color C – 27 sc

Band, Grid, Band – 39 sc

Ch2 corner Bi-color Square – 1 sc

Bi-color Square – 15 sc

Ch2 of same and next Bi-color Square – sc2tog = 1 sc

Bi-color Square – 15 sc

Ch2 corner Bi-color Square – 1 sc

Color A Edging – 2 sc

Ch 1, turn. (191 sc)

Row 2 (WS): Sc in each sc across. Finish off. (191 sc)

Right Side of Afghan – Worked in reverse order with slightly different stitch counts in certain sections.

Color A Edging – 2 sc

Ch2 corner Bi-color Square – 1 sc

Bi-color Square – 15 sc

Ch2 of same and next Bi-color Square – sc2tog = 1 sc

Bi-color Square – 15 sc

Ch2 corner Bi-color Square – 1 sc

Band, Grid, Band – 38 sc

Half Circle color A – 27 sc

Quarter Circle color A – 14 sc

Color A Edging – 2 sc

Right Angle color C – 23 sc

Right Angle color A – 23 sc

Color A Edging – 2 sc

Ch 1, turn. (191 sc)

Row 2 (WS): Sc in each sc across, ch 1 turn. DO NOT finish off. Continue with Border.

BORDER

The Border is the same stitch pattern as the Decorative Band.

Continue with color A.

Rnd 1 (RS):

Working on Long Side:

(Sc, dc) in first st, [sk next st, (sc, dc) in next st] to end of side.

Rotate to work on Short Top Side:

(Sc, dc) in first vertical st, sk next vertical st, (sc, dc) in next st, [sk next st, (sc, dc) in next st] to last 2 vertical sts, sk next vertical st, (sc, dc) in last vertical st.

Rotate and repeat Long Side and Short Side ending on Bottom Side, join with sl st to beg sc, ch 1, turn.

Rnd 2 (WS): PM in the last dc on each side this Rnd.

(Sc, dc) in first sc, [sk next dc, (sc, dc) in next sc] around all sides, join with sl st to beg sc,

ch 1, turn.

Rnd 3 (RS): Sc in same st, (sc, hdc, sc) in next marked dc, [sc, in each st to last marked dc on this side, (sc, hdc, sc) in marked dc] around to beg sc, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off.
