This pattern is named after my younger sister Karen. She’s a foster mother, an adoptive mother, and she also crochets. This was a housewarming gift for her.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate Beginner

MATERIALS: Worsted weight cotton
Crochet hook size H / 5.0 mm
Tapestry needle

SIZE: 8” square after blocking

INSTRUCTIONS:
Ch 36.

Row 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, *skip next 3 ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch, skip next 3 ch**, (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch; rep from * across, ending last rep at **, 3 dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), sc in first dc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-3 loop**, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-2 space, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, skip next 3 sts, (sc, ch 1, hdc) in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first hdc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-2 space**, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-3 loop; rep from * across, ending last rep at **, skip next 3 sts, 3 dc in 2nd ch of turning ch, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 – 3 until cloth measures 8”. Do not finish off. You will work the border next.

Border:

Leaving jagged edge alone, you will now make the 3 straight edges to match it. This border is worked by sight only. Be flexible with it.

When your cloth has reach desired size, ch 4, sl st in a st about1 ½ inch around the corner (you are now working on a straight side of cloth), *ch 3, sl st in a st about ½ inch from last sl st, ch 4, sl st in about ¼ inch from last sl st, rep from * around the 3 straight edges. Finish off.

Remember: This is not an exact pattern, but work it by sight and it will turn out nicely and match the original jagged edge well enough and turn out to be a nice, lacey cloth.
