Here’s a new pattern for you to work on. A fellow Raveler (larudden) asked me about my Unholey Granny Square pattern and wanted a rectangle version. She wanted to make one big afghan block, but no square. All the versions she had seen (and me too) had been the traditional granny square pattern with holes that you just make into one giant square for your afghan, or one giant rectangle. But they still had the holes. So at her request, I tweaked the Unholey Granny Square pattern and came up with the Unholey Rectangle pattern. She loved it, and I hope you do too. She even tested the pattern for me – thank you larudden very much for your help with that!
You can sew your rectangles together like traditional squares, or add as many rounds as you like making the rectangle as large as you want. Make a rug or an afghan – the possibilities are endless! Go for it!!!!
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner
MATERIALS:
Any weight yarn
Crochet hook any size appropriate
Tapestry needle
ABBREVIATIONS:
Ch= chain
Dc= double crochet
Lp/s= loop/loops
Rep= repeat
Step 1: Decide what dimensions you want your rectangle to be when finished. For example, an afghan could be 45” X 60”.
Step 2: Subtract your width from your length. Example: 60” – 45” = 15”.
Step 3: Chain any number of chains to reach 15”. Add 2 more chains (will count as your first dc). This will be your starting chain. The number of chains doesn’t matter, the length of your chain does.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Note: The pattern is not written to turn after each round, however, it is your choice to do so.

Hi Melinda! LOVE this! I like to make placemats with crocheted rectangles, so I'd love to make some with THIS pattern! Thank you for sharing it! ~tina
Hi there! Two quick questions for you. I want to use this pattern for a rather large Afghan. Probably about a full size. Should I start with a longer chain? Also would only doing 1ch in between the dcs for the corner make the holes smaller or just warp it?
She has the formula to make any sized rectangle on Ravelry.Just type in Unholey Rectangle. The pattern on Ravelry is a bit different. I stumbled upon it as I too was wondering the same thing. Hope this helps
