This FREE crochet pattern is a 12” square and is labeled for the intermediate crocheter. It is dedicated to my beautiful granddaughter, Katharine. The inspiration for designing the square came from a photo of Katharine with a rose behind her ear.

I was at the family cemetery showing my DIL, Audra,  the places where my dad’s family were buried. We showed her my paternal grandparents graves. There is always something so humbling that comes over me when I go to the cemetery. It’s my family. I don’t want to leave them. I want to be with them. I want to know more about them. They had hopes and dreams and thoughts and prayers. What were they? I wish I knew.

One thing I do have is a rose bush. My great-grandmother planted it after my grandmother’s baby sister died. We don’t know how she died. It seems so sad. But the rose bush is still growing strong 100+ years later. The day we were there, Audra picked a rose and placed it behind Katharine’s ear. It looked so beautiful, I snapped a picture of her. The photo is the inspiration for this design. I hope you enjoy it. 🙂

Twisted Cable St (TwCable St): Sk next st, dc in next 3 sts, yo, with hk in front of work, insert hk from back to front into sk st, yo and loosely pull up a lp to height of the 3-dc group – enclosing it, yo and complete a dc. Note: If you would like the original cable stitch as shown above, work the Cable St as follows: Dc in next 3 sts, yo, with hk in front of work, go back and insert hk from front to back into sk st, yo and loosely pull up a lp to height of the 3-dc group – enclosing it, yo and complete a dc.

Corner Puff St: (Puff St, ch 3, Puff St) in same sp.

Puff St: Yo, insert hk into specified sp, yo and pull up a lp to height of current row (3 lps on hk), (yo, pull up long lp in same sp) 3 times, yo and draw through all 9 lps on hk.
