Simple Four-Patch Afghan Square

Here’s an easy pattern for a four-patch square. I designed it about a year ago, but just recently wrote it down and had it tested. I hope you like it.

SIMPLE FOUR PATCH

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

FINISHED SIZE: 12” square

MATERIALS: 6 colors worsted weight yarn, 1 oz. Each
Crochet hook size H / 5.0 mm
Tapestry needle
STITCHES USED:
Hdc = half double crochet
Dc = double crochet
Tr = triple crochet

INSTRUCTIONS:
Make 4 – 4” squares of different colors:

Ch 4.

Rnd. 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, *3 dc in same ch, ch 2, rep from * twice more, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 4.

Rnd. 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, *in ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), work 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, rep from * twice more, in ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3.

Rnd. 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, *in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), work 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * twice more, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Finish off.

Sew / whipstitch the four squares together with tapestry needle as shown in photo. Now there is an 8” square. The next round begins around the 8” square.
 
Rnd. 1: Attach contrasting yarn with sl st to any corner, ch 3, 1 dc in corner, *1 dc in each of next 11 dc, 1 dc in corner sp of 4” square, 1 tr in join of two squares, 1 dc in corner sp of next 4” square, 1 dc in each of next 11 dc, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * twice more, 1 dc in each of next 11 dc, 1 dc in corner sp of 4” square, 1 tr in join of two squares, 1 dc in corner sp of next 4” square, I dc in each of next 11 dc, 2 dc in corner sp, ch 2, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. (29 dc on each side)


Rnd. 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 28 dc, *in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), 1 dc in next 29 dc, rep from * twice more, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Finish off. (33 dc on each side)

Rnd. 3: Attach contrasting color with sl st to any corner, in corner work (ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), *1 dc in each of next 32 dc, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * twice more, 1 dc in each of next 32 dc, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. (37 dc on each side)

Note: Measure your square at this point. Decide whether to work the last round in dc or hdc to make 12”. Pattern is written as dc.

Rnd. 4: Ch 3, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), *work 1 dc in each of next 36 dc, in corner work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), rep from * twice more, work 1 dc in each of next 35 dc, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Finish off. (41 dc on each side) Weave in ends with tapestry needle. Block.
