Crazy Granny Afghan Square Free Crochet Pattern

Here’s a free crochet afghan square pattern that’s pretty easy to make and makes up very pretty. Join them all together for a lovely granny square afghan. This is a simple twist on the timely granny square. Start with a granny circle and then square it up.

MATERIALS:                       

Worsted weight yarn

Crochet hook H / 5.0 mm

Tapestry needle

STITCH GUIDE:      

Sl St = slip stitch

Sc = single crochet

Hdc = half double crochet

Dc= double crochet

Tr = treble crochet

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

Rnd 1: Ch 4, work 11 dc in first ch, join with sl st in top of beg ch-4. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout pattern), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same st as join, ch 1, sk next dc, *(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc; rep from * 4 more times; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. ( 24 dc and 12 ch-1 sps)

Rnds 3 and 4: Sl st in each st to first ch-1 sp, (sl st, ch 3, 2 dc) in first ch -1 sp, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch -1 sp, ch 1; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. (36 dc and 12 ch -1 sps at end of Rnd 4)

Rnd 5: Sl st in each st to first ch-1 sp, (sl st, ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in first ch -1 sp, ch 1, *(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch -1 sp, ch 1; rep from * 10 more times; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. (48 dc and 24 ch-1 sps)

Rnds 6: Rep Rnd 3. Finish off Color A. (24 ch-1 sps)

Rnd. 7: Attach Color B with sl st to any ch-1 sp, ch 4 (count as 1 tr), (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in same sp, *ch1, 3 dc in next sp, ch 1, 3 hdc in next sp, ch 1, 3 sc in next sp, ch 1, 3 hdc in next sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next sp, ch 1,** in next ch-1 sp work (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr), rep from * 3 times more, ending at **, join with sl st to beg tr.

Rnd. 8: Sl st into each st to next ch-1 sp, (sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, *[ch 1, in next sp work 3 dc] 6 times, ch 1,** in corner work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), rep from * 3 times more, ending at **, join with sl st to beg dc.

Rnd. 9: Sl st into each st to next ch-1 sp, (sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, *[ch 1, in next sp work 3 dc] 7 times, ch 1,** in corner work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), rep from * 3 times more, ending at **, join with sl st to beg dc.

Rnd. 10: Sl st into each st to next ch-1 sp, (sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, *[ch 1, in next sp work 3 dc] 8 times, ch 1,** in corner work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), rep from * 3 times more, ending at **, join with sl st to beg dc.

Rnd. 11: Sl st into each st to next ch-1 sp, (sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, *[ch 1, in next sp work 3 dc] 9 times, ch 1,** in corner work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), rep from * 3 times more, ending at **, join with sl st to beg dc.

Pattern Note:  At this point, measure your square. Then determine which stitch you will use in Rnd. 13 in order to achieve 12 inches.

Rnd. 12: Ch 1/2/3, *1 sc/hdc/dc in each dc and ch-1 sp to corner sp, in corner sp work 3 sc/hdc/dc, rep from * around square, join with sl st to beg sc/hdc/dc. Finish off, weave in ends, block.

    What an excellent square. I can see this square in a blanket with brightly colored centers and neutral color outside on each square. Thank you for the pattern. May have to get right on it!
