Basket of Berries Afghan Square

Get ready for a FREE crochet pattern that uses several different crochet stitches. I bet you’ll like working different kinds of stitches all in one little square. Just look at all the rich texture and interest those beautiful stitches bring. Not to mention that all this variety will keep you on your toes!! This is one of my most popular patterns and you’ll soon see why once you start working up your own Basket of Berries!
BASKET OF BERRIES AFGHAN SQUARE

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

FINISHED SIZE: 12” square

MATERIALS: 5 colors worsted weight yarn – Labeled A, B, C, D & E.

Crochet hook size H / 5.0 mm

Tapestry needle

STITCH GUIDE:                  

Beg = beginning

Bet = between

Ch/s = chain/s

Dc= double crochet

Hdc = half double crochet

Hk = hook

Rnd = round

Sc = single crochet

Sk = skip/skipped

Sl St = slip stitch

Sp/s = space/s

St/s = stitch/es

SPECIAL STITCHES:         

Back post double crochet (bpdc): Yo, insert hk from back to front to back around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp (yo, draw through 2 lps on hk) 2 times.

Beginning Cluster (begcl): Ch 2, yo, insert hk in same st/sp, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hk.

Beginning Popcorn (begpc): Ch 3, work 4 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through top ch-3, place dropped lp on hk and pull through st.

Beginning Shell (BegShell): Ch 3, 2 dc in same st/sp.

Cluster (Cl): (Yo, insert hk in sp indicated, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hk) twice, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hk.

Front post double crochet (fpdc): Yo and insert hk from front to back and to front again around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp (yo, draw through 2 lps on hk) 2 times.

Popcorn (pc): Work 5 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through top of first st made, place dropped lp on hk and pull through st.

Shell: 3 dc in same st/sp.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Rnd 1: With A ch 2, 8 sc in first ch, join with sl st to beg sc. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: BegCl in first st, ch 3, [Cl in next st, ch 3] around, join with sl st to top of BegCl. Finish off. (8 Cl, 8 ch-3)

Rnd 3: Join B with sl st to any ch-3 sp, begpc in same sp, [ch 2, fpdc around top of next Cl, ch 2, pc in next ch-3 sp] around omitting last pc, join with sl st to top of begpc. Finish off. (8 pc, 8 fpdc, 16 ch-2)

Rnd 4: Join C with sc to any fpdc, sc in next ch-2 sp, [ch 2, sk next pc and ch-2, (Shell, ch 3, Shell) in next fpdc, ch 2, sk next ch-2 and pc, sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next fpdc, sc in next ch-2 sp] around omitting last 2 sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (8 Shells, 12 sc, 8 ch-2, 4 ch-3)

Rnd 5: Sl st into next sc and ch-2 sp, BegShell in same sp, ch 1, [(Shell, ch 3, Shell) in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, (Shell in next ch-2 sp, ch 1) twice] around omitting last Shell and ch-1, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (16 Shells, 12 ch-1, 4 ch-3)

Rnd 6: Join A with sc to any ch-3 sp, (sc, hdc, 2 sc) in same sp – corner made, [place 1 sc in each dc and ch-1 sp to next corner ch-3, (2 sc, hdc, 2 sc) in ch-3 sp – corner made] around omitting last 5 corner sts, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off. (76 sc, 4 hdc)

Note: The ch-4 at beg of next 3 Rnds counts as (1 hdc, ch 2).

Rnd 7: Join D with sl st to any corner hdc, ch 4, [hdc in same st for corner, (ch 1, sk 1 st, hdc in next st) 10 times, ch 2] around omitting last hdc and ch-2, join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-4. (44 hdc, 40 ch-1, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 8: Sl st into corner ch-2 sp, ch 4, [hdc in same sp for corner, (ch 1, hdc in next ch sp) 11 times, ch 2] around omitting last hdc and ch-2, join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-4. (48 hdc, 44 ch-1, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 9: Sl st into corner ch-2 sp, ch 4, [hdc in same sp for corner, (ch 1, hdc in next ch sp) 12 times, ch 2] around omitting last hdc and ch-2, join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-4. Finish off. (52 hdc, 48 ch-1, 4 ch-2)

Note: Rnds 10 – 12 use a different corner and joining method in order to position the first st of next Rnd. The hdc join is counted as a ch-2 join.

Rnd 10: Join E with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, [dc in same sp, dc in each hdc and ch-1 sp to next corner ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp] around omitting last 4 corner sts, 2 dc in beg ch-2 sp, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3. (29 dc per side, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 11: Ch 3, dc in same sp, dc in next 2 sts, bpdc in next 5 sts, [(dc in next 5 sts, bpdc in next 5 sts) twice, dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp] around omitting last 4 corner sts, 2 dc in beg corner ch-2 sp, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3. (15 bpdc per side, 18 dc per side)

Rnd 12: Ch 3, dc in same sp, bpdc in next 4 sts, [(dc in next 5 sts, bpdc in next 5 sts) 3 times omitting last bpdc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp] around omitting last 4 corner sts, 2 dc in beg corner ch-2 sp, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3. (18 bpdc per side, 19 dc per side)

Rnd 13: Ch 1, (hdc, sc) in same sp, [sc in each st to next corner ch-2 sp, (sc, hdc, sc) in ch-2 sp] around omitting last 3 corner sts, sc in beg ch-2 sp, join with sl st to beg hdc. Finish off. (160 sts)

Rnd 14: Join C with sc to any corner hdc, (hdc, sc) in same st, sc in each st around and (sc, hdc, sc) in each corner hdc, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off. (168 sts)

Weave in ends, block.

Note: The nature of the post sts in the final Rnds may produce wonky edges. Blocking is recommended for this design.
