I am honored to share with you a FREE crochet pattern for a Prayer Shawl. It was designed in memory of my lovely friend, Donna Wilson, wilmaelee on Ravelry. Her favorite color is green, so I used Cascade Cantata in Lime. This is an easy, repetitive pattern – especially designed to encourage meditation and prayer with every stitch. A pretty edging completes the shawl.
Although this is a free pattern, and I encourage you to make many and give to those who need a hug, please also consider contributing to Donna’s fundraiser to help her family with ongoing medical costs. This would be a great way for the crochet community to band together and support a fellow crocheter.

MATERIALS & GUIDELINES
YARN: Cascade Yarns Cantata, Color – Lime, 3 hanks – 654 yds.
WEIGHT: 4 – Medium
SKILL LEVEL: Easy
HOOK: I / 5.5 mm
FINISHED SIZE: Length – 64” X Depth – 23”
OTHER: Tapestry Needle, Scissors
ABBREVIATIONS:
Beg = beginning
Begdc = beginning double crochet
Begtr = beginning treble crochet
Ch/s = chain/s
Dc= double crochet
FSC = foundation single crochet
Hk = hook
RS = right side
Sc = single crochet
Sk = skip/skipped
Sl St = slip stitch
Sp/s = space/s
St/s = stitch/es
Tr = treble crochet
WS = wrong side
BEGINNING STITCHES:

FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET (FSC):
FSC Tutorial – Foundation Single Crochet
STITCH MULTIPLE:
Foundation chains = Chain a multiple of 6 + 1 (+1 for base chain)
FSC (foundation single crochet) = Multiple of 6 + 1
SPECIAL STITCHES:
Shell = (2 tr, ch 1, 2 tr) in same st.
Triple Picot = Ch 4, sl st into 4th ch from hk, (ch 3, sl st into 3rdch from hk) twice, sl st into first ch.
INSTRUCTIONS
BODY
*Shawl is rectangular, worked from bottom to top and in rows from side to side.
*Ch or FSC the multiple as listed above to desired width.
*For FSC, begin pattern with Row 2.
*For foundation chains, begin pattern at Row 1.
Row 1: (RS) Working in back bumps of chs, sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch to end, turn. My sample – 188 foundation chs, 187 sc.
Row 2: (WS) Begtr in first st, [sk next 2 sts, Shell in next st, sk next 2 sts, tr in next st] to end, turn. My sample – 31 Shells, 32 tr.
Row 3: (RS) Ch 1, [place 1 sc in each tr and 1 sc in each ch-1 sp] to end, turn.
My sample – 187 sc.
Rep Rows 2 – 3 until desired size. DO NOT finish off.
My sample – I worked Rows 2 – 3 twelve (12) times.
EDGING
Sides
You have ended at Row 3 on RS.
1. Do not turn. Ch 1, rotate to work across short side. Sc evenly spaced across side to end. Finish off, weave in end.
2. Now you will work a row of sc across the other short side. With RS facing, join yarn with sc to right corner of other short side. Sc evenly spaced across this side to end (last row of shawl.) Finish off, weave in the two ends.
Bottom
The finishing sc edges have created an extra “stitch” on each end of the shawl, simulating 2 sc stitches. So instead of having 187 sc, there are now 189 “stitches.”
You will work into the vertical sides of these two faux stitches.
You may keep the same color yarn as the body of the shawl, or change to a complementary color here.
1. With RS facing and working on bottom foundation chains, join yarn with sl st to “faux stitch” on the right end of shawl, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 sts, [ch 4, sk next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts] to end, placing last dc in the extra “faux stitch,” turn.
2. Begdc in first dc, dc in next 2 dc, [ch 4, dc in next 3 dc] to end, turn.
3. Ch 2, sk first dc, (dc, Triple Picot, dc) in 2nd dc, sk 3rddc, [ch 3, sc around both ch-4 below enclosing them, ch 3, sk next dc, (dc, Triple Picot, dc) in next dc] to end, ch 2, sl st into last dc. Finish off, weave in ends.
Block with method of choice.
