HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS ORNAMENT SQUARE – MAKE 3

ABBREVIATIONS

BL = back loop

Beg = beginning

Ch/s = chain/s

Dc = double crochet

Dtr = double treble crochet

Hdc = half double crochet

Hk = hook

Lp/s = loop/s

Sc = single crochet

Sk = skip/skipped

Sl st = slip stitch

Sp/s = space/s

St/s = stitch/es

Tog = together

Tr = treble crochet

Yo = yarn over

HOOKCrochet hook size I / 5.5mm

FINISHED SIZE8” square

SPECIAL STITCHES

Begpc (beginning popcorn) – Ch 3, 4 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through 3rd ch of beg ch-3, place dropped lp on hk and pull through.

Pc (popcorn) – Work 5 dc in same st, drop lp from hk, insert hk from front to back through top of first st made, place dropped lp on hk and pull through st.

Fpsc (front post single crochet) – insert hk from front to back and to front again around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp, complete as regular sc.

Begcl (beginning cluster) – Ch 2, keeping last lp of each st on hk, dc in next 3 sts, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hk.

Cl (cluster) – Keeping last lp of each st on hk, dc in next 4 sts, yo, draw through all 5 lps on hk.

Dtr (double treble crochet) – Yo hk 3 times, insert hk in specified st, yo, pull up a lp, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hk] 4 times.

BegFpcl (beginning front post cluster) – Yo twice (3 lps on hk), insert hk into Rnd 4 fpsc directly below same ch-5 sp, yo and pull up a lp (4 lps on hk), (yo and draw through 2 lps) twice (2 lps on hk), insert hk in top of next Cl, yo and draw up a lp (3 lps on hk), yo twice (5 lps on hk), insert hk into next Rnd 4 fpsc, yo and pull up a lp (6 lps on hk), (yo and draw through 2 lps) 3 times (3 lps on hk), yo and draw through all 3 lps.

Fpcl (front post cluster) – Yo twice (3 lps on hk), insert hk into same Rnd 4 fpsc just worked, yo and pull up a lp (4 lps on hk), (yo and draw through 2 lps) twice (2 lps on hk), insert hk in top of next Cl, yo and draw up a lp (3 lps on hk), yo twice (5 lps on hk), insert hk into next Rnd 4 fpsc, yo and pull up a lp (6 lps on hk), (yo and draw through 2 lps) 3 times (3 lps on hk), yo and draw through all 3 lps.

Pick up tr – Insert hk first into BL of Color F tr directly in front and then into designated st behind it, complete a sc.

INSTRUCTIONSMake 3.

With B ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring – or make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 hdc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg hdc. Finish off. (12 hdc)

Rnd 2: Join C with sl st to any hdc, begpc in same st, ch 4, sk next st, [pc in next st, ch 4, sk next st] 5 times, join with sl st to top of begpc. Finish off. (6 pc, 6 ch-4)

Rnd 3: Join D with sl st to any ch-4 sp, (begpc, ch 4, pc) in same sp, ch 4, [(pc, ch 4, pc) in next ch-4 sp, ch 4] around, join with sl st to top of begpc. Finish off. (12 pc, 12 ch-4)

Rnd 4: Join A with sc to any ch-4 sp, 3 sc in same sp, fpsc around top of next pc, [4 sc in next ch-4 sp, fpsc around top of next pc] around, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off. (12 fpsc, 48 sc)

Rnd 5: Join E with sl st one st after any fpsc, Begcl, ch 5, sk next fpsc, [Cl, ch 5, sk next fpsc] around, join with sl st to top of Begcl. Finish off. (12 Cl, 12 ch-5)

Rnd 6: Join B with sc to any ch-5 sp, 4 sc in same sp, work BegFpcl, [5 sc in next ch-5 sp, work Fpcl] around placing second leg of last Fpcl in same st as first leg of BegFpcl, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off. (12 Fpcl, 60 sc)


 


Note: The photo above of the Fpcl might not quite match up with the Stitch Definition, but just follow the written and video instructions and it will turn out nicely. 🙂

Rnd 7: Working in BL this Rnd, join A with sc to any Fpcl, sc in each st around, join with sl st to FL of beg sc (leaving BL unworked.)  (72 sc)

Rnd 8: Ch 4 (counts as tr), tr in FL of next 6 sts. Finish off. (7 tr)

Rnd 9: Working in BL entire Rnd, join G with sc to behind ch-4 join, sc in of next 6 sts, [hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, tr in next st, (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next st, tr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts] around omitting last 7 sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (21 sts per side, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 10: Ch 3, dc in next 13 sts, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 21 sts] around omitting last 14 dc, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.  (25 dc per side, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 11 : Ch 1, working in BL of each tr, pick up tr and sc in same st as join, sc in both lps of next 6 sts of Rnd 10 while picking up each consecutive tr in BL (see Special Stitches), [sc in both lps of each st to ch-2 sp, (sc, hdc, sc) in ch-2 sp] around, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off leaving a long tail for joining.  (27 sc per side, 4 hdc for corners)
