LET’S GET STARTED!
HOLLY JOLLY ORNAMENT SQUARE – MAKE 3
ABBREVIATIONS
Beg = beginning
BL = back loop
Ch/s = chain/s
Dc = double crochet
FL = front loop
Hdc = half double crochet
Hk = hook
Lp/s = loop/s
Prev = previous
Sc = single crochet
Sk = skip/skipped
Sl st = slip stitch
Sp/s = space/s
St/s = stitch/es
Tr = treble crochet
Yo = yarn over
HOOK – Crochet hook size I / 5.5mm
FINISHED SIZE – 8” square
SPECIAL STITCHES
Fpdc (front post double crochet): Yo and insert hk from front to back and to front again around post of st indicated, yo and pull up a lp, complete as regular dc.
Long dc: Yo and pull up a lp to height of dc, (yo and draw through 2 lps) twice, completing a long dc.
BegCable-3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, working over the 3 prev dc just made, yo, insert hk from front to back into unworked st before first ch-3 and complete a long dc.
Cable-3: Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, working over the 3 prev dc just made, yo, insert hk from front to back into sk st before first dc and complete a long dc.
BegCable-4: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, working over the 4 prev dc just made, yo, insert hk from front to back into unworked st before first ch-3 and complete a long dc.
Cable-4: Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, working over the 4 prev dc just made, yo, insert hk from front to back into unworked st before first ch-3 and complete a long dc.
Pick up tr – Insert hk first into BL of Color F tr directly in front and then into designated st behind it, complete a sc.
INSTRUCTIONS – Make 3.
With D ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring – or make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Join E with sl st to any dc, ch 3 (count as dc), fpdc around post of same dc, [dc in next st, fpdc around post of same st] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (12 dc, 12 fpdc)
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in next st, fpdc around fpdc directly below, [dc in next 2 sts, fpdc around next fpdc] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (12 fpdc, 24 dc)
Rnd 4: Join B with sl st one st after any fpdc, work BegCable-3, [sk next st, work Cable-3] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (12 Cable-3 sts)
Rnd 5: Join C with sl st to join, work BegCable-4, [sk next st, work Cable-4] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off. (12 Cable-4 sts)
Rnd 6: Join D with sc to join, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, [sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] around, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off. (72 sc)
Rnd 7: Working in BL this Rnd, join A with sc to join, sc in each st around, join with sl st to FL of beg sc (leaving BL unworked.) (72 sc)
Rnd 8: Ch 4 (counts as tr), tr in FL of next 6 sts. Finish off. (7 tr)
Rnd 9: Working in BL entire Rnd, join G with sc to behind ch-4 join, sc in of next 6 sts, [hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, tr in next st, (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next st, tr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts] around omitting last 7 sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (21 sts per side, 4 ch-2)
Rnd 10: Ch 3, dc in next 13 sts, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 21 sts] around omitting last 14 dc, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (25 dc per side, 4 ch-2)
Rnd 11: Ch 1, working in BL of each tr, pick up tr and sc in same st as join, sc in both lps of next 6 sts of Rnd 12 while picking up each consecutive tr in BL (see Special Stitches), [sc in both lps of each st to ch-2 sp, (sc, hdc, sc) in ch-2 sp] around, join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off leaving a long tail for joining. (27 sc per side, 4 hdc for corners)
