It’s Time for a CAL!

Are you ready for a Crochet Along?

If you’re not familiar with that term, let me explain. A crochet along, or CAL for short, is an event where worldwide crocheters all crochet the same pattern during the same time period.

There are many variations. Here are a few:

  • The pattern can be free or paid (or both.).
  • The pattern can be available in its entirety, or released in installments.
  • The pattern can be seen beforehand as a finished object (FO), so that you know exactly what you will be making and what it looks like.
  • It can also be presented as a mystery, where you may know the general category of the FO (afghan, shawl, hat, etc.), but you don’t know what it will look like. It’s a surprise! This is known as an MCAL, and they are really fun to participate in.
  • There may be yarn kits available to purchase, if you’d like to use the recommended yarn and colors.
  • If the yarn requirements are available, you can use the yarn and colors of your own choice.
  • Prizes may or may not be offered during a CAL.
  • Some CALs have a strict schedule, and want to progress within a certain timeline. Installments may be published weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly – depending on the complexity of the project and the intention of the host.
  • Even with a schedule, some CALs. are more relaxed. There may be a deadline, but you can work at your own pace and finish according to your own schedule.
  • There may be supportive groups on Social Media platform for you to join, where you can receive assistance, tips, comradery, encouragement, and show off your work.

These are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head. CALs are always evolving and no two are exactly the same. I will say that participating in a CAL is such a fun way to crochet. You will meet new online friends, meet up with old friends, and you can see what everyone else’s project looks like. You may even get some inspiration and gain some knowledge. I have never met a CAL that I didn’t like‼

So, I’ll ask again. Are you ready for a Crochet Along?

I will be hosting a free CAL, along with Cascade Yarns, beginning on September 21, 2022. This CAL will be presented in weekly installments for 9 weeks. It will be a gorgeous (and I really mean gorgeous!) afghan. Did you pick up on any hints? Cascade yarn kits will be available to purchase, but not necessary to participate in the CAL. However, Cascade has put together 4 different kits with 4 of their quality yarns. We will be introducing a brand new yarn, which is featured in the afghan sample. Instructional videos will be available, courtesy of Tania Leis @HookedByTJ. I have partnered with Tania for previous CALs, and her videos are very helpful.

More details will be announced this week, so stay tuned and get your hooks ready.

While you’re waiting for the CAL to begin, you may want to look over some of my past CALs. Here’s a few that are free – right here on my blog!
