Part 3 – Tertiaries

Just joining the CAL? Check out these blog posts for previous pattern parts.

The flight feathers of the peacock are known as remiges (wing feathers) and rectrices (tail feathers). The wing feathers are made up of primary, secondary and tertiary feathers.

Tertiaries are small feathers covering the wing of the peacock. These are on the ‘upper arm’ of the bird. They are the short, innermost flight feathers on the rear edge of a wing, close to the body of the bird. They are not as important for flight as the primary and secondary feathers. Tertiaries act as a protective cover for all or part of the folded primaries and secondaries. They have a barred or striped pattern, and are very striking on their own. This type of peacock feather is widely sold and used for all kinds of crafting.
